21 (2008)

21 is one of the defining movies that showcased the culture around gambling and casinos really well. The movie features one of the biggest stars in Kevin Spacey, alongside Jim Sturgess and Kate Bosworth. 21 is based on a real case of an intelligent blackjack team that managed to take on some of the country’s biggest casinos for large sums of money.

The Cooler is an underrated classic that shows the life of an ordinary gambler making due with his rotten luck wherever he can. This film is an American neo-noir drama that is guaranteed to pull you in and leave you hooked for more.

The film revolves around Bernie Lootz, a man who has been dubbed the unluckiest man in Vegas. He lives in a dingy studio apartment with very little to his name and no loved ones to surround himself with. He works a grueling job for most of his day to recover the big debts he incurred from his gambling habits. Having had enough of the strip, Lootz plans to leave Las Vegas as soon as he’s done with his debt. But when he meets a cocktail waitress who shows him love for the first time, Bernie staves off his plans. The Cooler is a movie that is definitely not worth missing.

The Gambler (2014)

The Gambler is a crime drama film that focuses on the deep seeded reality of a man affected by his afflictions with gambling. It tells the story of a Jim Bennett, a literature teacher with a big gambling addiction. After nearly spending all of his money on his habit, Jim borrows money from his mother and a well-known loan shark in order to keep up with his vice.

After failing to come up with any money, Jim Bennett is given a deadline: either pay out the money he borrowed or be murdered at the hands of a ruthless loan shark. Faced with this dilemma, Jim must now go his own way and find any means necessary to be able to pay off his debt and keep his life and sanity alive. The Gambler is a classic story involving thrill, suspense, and the chase of a man who has committed many wrongs in his life.
